China’s Mini-Game Market: Strategic Insights for Web3 Developers

According to the Weekly Gaming Reports Recap published on Substack, WeChat Mini Games reached 571 million monthly active users by August 2025, against 171 million for Douyin.

China’s Mini-Game Market: Strategic Insights for Web3 Developers

The gap matters to Web3 game teams looking at lightweight mobile distribution: scale is available, but it sits behind a platform-controlled funnel, revenue split and user-acquisition market.

The recap, drawing on analysis by Meridian Play and JINKE, places China’s mini-games market at RMB 53.535 billion in 2025, up 34.39% year on year. It is expected to exceed RMB 70 billion in 2026. That is a large market, but not an open one.

Distribution is the bottleneck

WeChat’s global MAU stood at 1.43 billion as of March 2026. Its Mini Programs accounted for 973 million monthly users out of 1.021 billion across the broader mini-program market. Mini games are therefore not a marginal format inside the application; they are a distribution layer with deep embedded reach.

The audience is also structurally broad. More than 55% of players live in tier-3 cities or below, while users aged 24–40 account for half of the total. Average daily playtime exceeds 60 minutes, and players generate more than 100 million in-game friend interactions per day.

For game economies, this points to an obvious test. Social loops and low-friction sessions already exist. The issue is not whether a token, wallet or collectible can be designed around repeat engagement. The issue is whether it can survive the platform’s rules without adding onboarding latency that native mini games do not impose.

Monetisation remains platform-routed

In-app purchases generated RMB 36.464 billion in 2025, or 68.11% of mini-games revenue. Advertising produced RMB 17.071 billion, or 31.89%. For ad-funded games, revenue is split equally between publisher and platform. For IAP titles, publishers retain 60%, with WeChat taking 40%.

Those terms are the operational fact to inspect before treating the channel as a shortcut for Web3 distribution. A game may acquire users inside WeChat, but the platform remains the toll collector. Ownership narratives do not alter the settlement layer.

Competition is increasing too. More than 51,000 mini games ran paid advertising in 2025, a 54% annual increase. More than 9,000 games are reportedly in development for WeChat Mini Games. User acquisition is not disappearing because the audience is large; the auction is becoming more crowded.

Hardcore genres have the throughput

Among the top 500 games running active user acquisition, MMORPGs accounted for 41%, idle games for 18.4%, and card games for 11.2%. Together, those categories represented 70.6% of the market. The top MAU titles in August 2025 included strategy, casual RPG and shooter games, while Whiteout Survival held the leading MAU position for three consecutive quarters in 2025.

This is relevant because persistent progression, repeat sessions and social coordination are the mechanics most often cited for on-chain economies. Yet the report’s numbers describe conventional mobile games operating at platform scale, not evidence that blockchain rails improve retention, conversion or acquisition.

The week’s wider reporting also included a Mobidictum look at Vietnam’s mobile-gaming expansion and an AD HOC NEWS item on Playtika’s margins. Neither changes the central constraint shown by the WeChat data: mobile game scale is available, but distribution, payments and user access remain centralized.

Scalability verdict: yes for games built around native platform mechanics. No evidence yet that Web3 infrastructure reduces the friction of entering that system.
