Magic Eden Pivots to Crypto Gambling as NFT Marketplace Operations Wind Down

Magic Eden is decommissioning its Bitcoin and Ethereum marketplace stack and redirecting the company toward crypto casino products, according to reporting from Yellow.com.

Magic Eden Pivots to Crypto Gambling as NFT Marketplace Operations Wind Down

The Bitcoin Ordinals, Runes, and EVM-compatible listings on Polygon, Base, and Avalanche go offline as early as the first week of March; the cross-chain wallet enters export-only mode mid-month before full closure in early April. Throughput is the reason this matters: per Dune data cited in the report, Bitcoin-based assets generated roughly $121,000 of the platform's $576 million monthly trading volume — a near-zero share that explains the exit.

Architecture under deprecation

Three layers come down. Bitcoin Ordinals and Runes marketplaces, the EVM surfaces (Polygon, Base, Avalanche), and the cross-chain wallet — the abstraction that let users hold and trade assets across networks without leaving Magic Eden. Only Solana is retained. In early 2023, Magic Eden captured more than half of Bitcoin Ordinals trading volume within a week of launch, at a moment when Bitcoin-based assets accounted for roughly 70% of total NFT market activity. The current numbers invert that position: $576 million in monthly volume across the platform, with Bitcoin contributing $121,000. Bridge and indexing overhead for non-Solana assets sits on the wrong side of that revenue line.

Pivot to a casino operating model

CEO Jack Lu framed the reorientation as chasing "the massive opportunity in iGaming," with Dicey — a crypto casino and sportsbook unveiled in January — as the new center of gravity. Token mechanics follow: Lu said the firm will end NFT buybacks and restructure how the ME token functions across products. Per CoinGecko, ME traded around $0.12 on Friday, down 97% from its $5.63 December 2024 debut. Total funding stands at $140 million, including a $130 million Series B in 2022 that valued the company at $1.6 billion, co-led by Greylock and Electric Capital. Slingshot Finance, acquired last year initially framed around meme-coin trading across chains, is part of that consolidating footprint.

What to verify on your end

Users holding Bitcoin Ordinals, Runes, or EVM-based assets in Magic Eden's wallet need to withdraw before mid-March, when the wallet locks to export-only mode. Full closure follows in early April, after which recovery shifts to the user. Migrating to a self-custody wallet or an alternative marketplace now removes dependency on the export window — a single point of failure the platform itself is conceding doesn't earn its infrastructure cost.
