How Infrastructure Consolidation is Redefining the Future of Web3 Gaming
According to Coin Gabbar's July 30 roundup, Immutable finalized a two-chain merger on July 15, 2026, collapsing Immutable X and Immutable zkEVM into a single network branded Immutable Chain.

The move ends a split that had fractured liquidity, NFT inventory, and developer attention since the zkEVM chain launched. The open question is whether this consolidation actually reduces friction at the settlement layer or merely repackages the same validator set under a new name.
Immutable's consolidated stack
Immutable's official X account confirms IMX Play now operates a dedicated Polygon Hub, onboarding five Polygon titles with quests and rewards. The project also stated IMX will adopt Polygon's AggLayer to unify cross-chain liquidity. AggLayer in principle functions as a shared settlement layer — chains post proofs and inherit security rather than each running independent validator sets. That architecture addresses a real bottleneck: fragmented bridges and siloed liquidity pools have been GameFi's core structural weakness. Whether AggLayer's shared proofs translate into measurably lower latency or higher throughput for game transactions is not yet documented. Coin Gabbar cites a CoinGecko figure placing the broader Gaming (GameFi) sector near $4.92 billion in market capitalization, up 4.2% over 24 hours at the time of writing, with the Gaming Blockchains subcategory sitting between $857 million and $1 billion. Those numbers describe market activity, not network load.
The rest of the infrastructure map
Ronin's blog confirms its migration from a standalone sidechain to an Ethereum Layer 2 was completed in May 2026. A first governance dashboard, allowing RON holders to vote on treasury and protocol decisions, is flagged for Q3 2026. The Sandbox's 2025 year-in-review places SANDchain, its own Layer 2, in testnet with mainnet targeted for sometime in 2026. Gala continues running GalaChain as its own layer-1, per the project's CoinMarketCap description, with a four-phase decentralization roadmap outlined but no firm 2026 dates. Three different architectural bets — L2 settlement under Ethereum security, a custom L2, and an independent L1 — running in parallel. Each carries a different trust model and a different path to decentralization.
What to verify
Read the validator documentation before treating any of these as decentralized. Ronin's Q3 dashboard should be checked against actual on-chain proposal execution, not just the UI. SANDchain mainnet claims need verification of sequencer decentralization and fraud-proof latency. Immutable's AggLayer adoption requires confirmation that shared proofs cover game transactions specifically, not just token transfers. Token prices are downstream of these structural facts; they are not the facts themselves.
