China’s Gaming Market Hits Record Revenue as Lightweight Titles Dominate

domestic game market cleared RMB 188.45 billion in H1 2026, up 12.17% year-on-year, according to Gamma Data figures surfaced during ChinaJoy 2026 coverage.

China’s Gaming Market Hits Record Revenue as Lightweight Titles Dominate

The record run tracks two parallel inputs: lightweight titles absorbing user acquisition spend, and AI tooling sinking deeper into the development pipeline. Globally, online gaming is projected to exceed $351.23 billion by 2035, per SNS Insider — a forecast that frames the H1 China print as current-state data, not a ceiling. For Web3 gaming, the scale resets the baseline against which any tokenized economy will now be measured.

The throughput layer

The 12.17% delta is volume, not pricing power. Lightweight formats — mobile, casual, browser — captured the bulk of net new revenue. That is the segment where onboarding friction is lowest and session length is shortest. Web3 gaming has spent several cycles promising to compress that same funnel. The H1 data confirms lightweight remains the only category where conversion economics consistently function.

State channels, L2 rollups, and account abstraction improve the rails. None of it registers if the first session drops the user. Telegram-native games, browser micro-experiences, and similar lightweight Web3 formats remain the closest thing the sector has to a functioning onramp at scale. Latency and throughput benchmarks matter less than session-one retention.

AI as a cost curve, not a product

The "deeper AI integration" framing in the ChinaJoy coverage refers to developer-side tooling — asset generation, NPC behavior, procedural content pipelines. None of it alters the player-facing ownership layer. Asset persistence, custodial risk, and token sink design are unchanged. AI compresses marginal ship cost. It does not solve the structural defect GameFi has carried since 2021: tokenized economies still depend on demand-side activity that is not primarily speculative.

If AI tooling measurably lowers the cost of shipping a lightweight Web3 title, expect a new studio cohort through 2026–2027. Until the cost curve moves, the H1 print describes the market the sector competes against — not one it participates in.

For teams planning entry, the structural overhead has not decreased. Securing a durable web identity still sits on the launch checklist next to contract audits and key management architecture, and none of those line items have gotten cheaper.
